Synopsis

Mother lies in bed.  She is ill.  Her daughter brings in cups of tea for them both.  They sit is silence.  The atmosphere is painfully uncomfortable.

Suddenly the daughter jumps into the bed.  “Shufty up Mother!”  The daughter hands over the tea tray exclaiming that it is no longer a tea tray but a steering wheel and not for just any car – daddy’s car – the Jag.  The double bed is no longer; instead the pair imagine that they are sitting in a beautiful vehicle.  Now that the ice has been broken, they are about to take the roadtrip of a lifetime… without ever leaving the bedroom.

First stop – Paris at midnight.  We see twinkling street lamps and brightly lit Parisian bars reflected in the mother’s glasses.  She always wanted to take her daughter here, drink wine, be sophisticated.  We hear the gorgeous French men shouting “Bonjour!” and all is a beautiful dream until…it starts to rain.  Real drops of rain hit the windscreen at the foot of the bed and reflect on their disappointed faces.  There is a screech of breaks, headlights dazzle them, Mother pulls the duvet over her head….

“Somewhere warmer” says the Daughter.  Mother peeks over the eiderdown “Hollywood!”  Mother would have made a great actress if she hadn’t settled down and had children.  However she did make one great appearance in a sexy Bond girl bikini in the seventies and got some excellent reviews from the kind men at the golf club.  “Cocktail?” asks the daughter as she leans over and retrieves two Martini cocktails from a handsome waiter in a swanky LA Bar.  When she leans back, she is back in the bed.  The pair sip on their drinks, grinning like two Hollywood starlets.

Mother says she knows where she wants to go now.  And she wants to go home.  But she wants to get there a month ago, on her daughters birthday, the day before she discovered the lump.  “Can we do that, can we go there in your magic car?”

Daughter is confused, but Mother explains that it was the most perfect day and that her daughter had looked so grown up, and she had thought that from now on they might be best friends, as two grown women.  It was to be a second chapter for them both and sadly it had been, but for all the wrong reasons.

But Daughter won’t give in, “there’s still good times to come.”

“Only if you count the ones I have in bed”

Silence.

And then the roar of a massive fit of giggles as the pair realise what she has just said.

There is hope in their humour and the pair decide to go off once again, this time for real, in a real car.  Where will they go?  Shopping perhaps.  What for?  Sexy Bond girl bikinis.  Definitely.
